Grants

The Buhl Regional Health Foundation is a private health foundation. We support the important work of non-profit agencies that strive to meet the needs of residents impacted by health-related needs in the greater Mercer County and the surrounding areas. We do this by listening, partnering, and providing resources.

GRANT REQUIREMENTS

To qualify as an Optimizing the Health of our Children grant recipient, your organization’s initiative must meet the following requirements:

  • Initiative must be new to the community.
  • Initiative must provide services and/or outreach to children in the community aged 18 and under.
  • Initiative must intentionally address health disparities and/or inequities.
  • Initiative’s goals must be clearly identified and methods for measurement of goals and objectives should be clearly described.
  • Initiative must include a plan for collaborating across sectors in our community and/or establishing strong community partnerships.

Grant Proposal Process

We accept Letters of Inquiry (LOI) for grants twice per year. All LOI’s received for that grant cycle are reviewed and we then decide if a program or project is a good potential match to the Foundation’s mission and funding priorities. Those that are determined to be a good fit are invited to submit a full proposal through the online grant system. Our Board of Directors considers grant proposals for approval at two meetings per year in March and September. Board action occurs after proposals have been reviewed and recommended by the staff and Grants Committee.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must be a tax exempt, non-profit organization under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
  • Applicants must be within our geographical service area.
  • Faith-based organizations must welcome all faiths and participation in religious activity participation must be
    clearly defined as optional.
  • Applicant’s efforts must serve individuals, aged 18 and under, who reside in Mercer County, PA.
  • Previous grantees of BRHF must have fulfilled the required 18 month waiting period from their last grant award and all previous grants must be closed (all grant reporting completed and any unused funds returned).

Grant Exclusions

The Buhl Regional Health Foundation will not fund:

  • Individuals
  • For-profit entities
  • Lobbying/political campaigns
  • Debt reduction/existing financial obligations
  • Foreign operations or expenditures
  • Fundraising event sponsorship
  • Membership in civic organizations
  • Endowment support
  • Supplemental funding to previously awarded grants or existing programs.
  • Direct payment to a pediatric care provider.
  • Research projects, such as clinical trials.
  • Health fairs or other one-time events.
  • Building, construction, maintenance and repairs.
  • Additional expenses may be disallowed at the discretion of BRHF

This is not an exclusive list. Our staff, Grants Committee and Board of Directors will determine all inclusions and exclusions.

Grant Process Opens

When the grant process opens, we will begin accepting Letters of Inquiry and applications for our upcoming grant cycle.

Letter of Inquiry (LOI)

Organizations that meet eligibility criteria are able to submit a Letter of Inquiry (LOI) as first step for a funding request along with an upload of a letter of tax exempt status which is a requirement for consideration of a full proposal.

Full Proposal

If an LOI meets our criteria, the organization is invited to submit a full proposal and will be required to upload supporting documents such as 990, Strategic Plan, Audited Financial Statement, Operating & Project Budget.

Board Approval

Grants Committee presents its recommendations to Board of Directors for approval of grant funding.

Grant Agreement

If approved, organizations will receive a detailed Grant Commitment Letter via email to be signed electronically. BRHF Grant Award Agreement will be sent.

Grant Check Processed

To ensure funding, Grant Agreement must be submitted by the date below. Once the signed Grant Agreement is submitted, the grant payment will be processed.

Monitor & Follow-up

Our staff will review progress reports with the Grantee at the times stated in the Grant Agreement. Summary Reports will then be provided to our Grants Committee for discussion of impacts, outcomes, lessons learned and grantee’s future eligibility to request funding.
